Special Photo Project: “Al Otro Lado De La Pared”

I distributed 30 disposable cameras to children aged 7-12 at the Alex Rocha Youth Center in San Francisco, Cartagena, Colombia.

I founded and funded this project to create a space where the children could document and narrate their lived experiences, capturing the essence of their community just outside the walled city. This participatory approach empowered the students to tell their own narratives and explore the significance of their imagery.

Students were introduced to basic photography techniques through practice sessions. Each participant then received a disposable camera, which they used for a week to document their surroundings. Afterward, they returned their cameras for development.

Students were given physical copies of all their images and charged to select one photo to write a reflection about and display at the center. This project fostered visual storytelling and deepened the children’s connection to their environment and its representation through their lens.
